Minimalist photography is an art of observation, patience, and restraint. By reducing a scene to its most essential elements, photographers can transform simple subjects into powerful visual statements. A single shape, a subtle texture, a carefully placed subject, or an unexpected use of negative space can communicate an entire story without the need for complexity. Behind these seemingly simple images, however, there is often a great deal of thought, experimentation, and intention.
In this article, we explore the stories of the winners of our Minimalist Photography Contest, discovering the ideas, experiences, and creative journeys behind their remarkable photographs. Each winning photographer approached simplicity in a different way, demonstrating that minimalism is not simply about having fewer elements in the frame, but about knowing what to include, what to remove, and where to direct the viewer's attention.
FLORIAN KRIECHBAUMER

I’m Florian, a multidisciplinary photographer based in Dubai. My interest in photography began through curiosity during my early travels and developed into a desire to capture places from new perspectives. I have worked across landscape, cityscape, aerial, astrophotography and more, but my current focus is travel and conservation, for example through collaborations with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
Over the last 15 years, my work has been featured by outlets such as National Geographic and CNN. I have also been fortunate enough to exhibit my photography around the world and publish a photo book with a companion application.
Nevertheless, my goal is to continue developing my storytelling and using photography to highlight meaningful subjects, hopefully bringing them to life in a new way for viewers. I hope my images encourage people to look more closely at the world and see the subjects I photograph in a new light.
When I am shooting, I think about composition and technical details, but most importantly, about what makes an imagine meaningful. I believe a strong photograph comes from understanding and appreciating the subject, then presenting it in a way that connects with others.

ALIREZA BAGHERI

Photography, for me, is far more than just a creative pursuit or a profession; it is an intimate way of life—a sanctuary for peace in a world that often moves too fast. My name is Alireza Bagheri Sani, a visual artist based in Tehran, Iran. My creative roots do not lie solely in visual art; they began in the written word.
My artistic journey started as a writer, where I learned how to weave narratives and evoke emotions through the power of language. This naturally evolved into a deep fascination with filmmaking, where I spent years learning the complex rhythms of motion, composition, and the “pulse” of a scene. However, it wasn’t until 2017 that I picked up a camera to explore the static image. I realized then that while film captures a narrative flow, a still photograph possesses the unique ability to freeze eternity within a single fraction of a second.
My heart is deeply anchored in conceptual minimalism. I find profound beauty in simplicity—the act of stripping away the noise of the world to reveal the raw, unadorned essence of a subject. For me, minimalism is not about “less”; it is about “more”—more meaning, more silence, and more space for the viewer’s imagination to breathe. My photography is an attempt to create visual poetry where silence speaks louder than words.
When I am out shooting, my mind isn’t occupied with technical settings or the latest gear. Instead, I am in a state of meditation. I am searching for that elusive, perfect intersection where light, geometry, and human emotion collide. Whether I am documenting the quiet corners of my environment or conceptualizing an abstract idea, I am looking for the “stillness” within the chaos. I want the viewer to look at my work and pause, to find a moment of serenity amidst the hustle of their own lives.
Photography has become my daily practice of mindfulness. It forces me to slow down, to observe the subtle shifts in light and shadow that most people walk past without a second glance. It is how I stay grounded. Over the years, I have been fortunate enough to have my work recognized with numerous awards, but the true prize remains the connection I build with those who view my images.
My aspirations as an artist are simple yet ambitious: to continue refining my minimalist vision, to share the hidden, quiet beauty of my surroundings, and to inspire others to view the world with a slower, more intentional gaze. I want my images to be a testament that peace can be found even in the smallest details.

Alireza's journey from writing and filmmaking to finding "freezing eternity" in still photography truly resonates, emphasizing that minimalism isn't about absence, but about distilling "more meaning, more silence." It's fascinating how a background in narrative arts can lead to such a profound appreciation for the singular moment. I wonder if this intentional slowing down, like in the town of salem, helps other photographers find their unique creative voice too. 😊
