Studio newborn photography offers the perfect environment for capturing peaceful, timeless portraits. With controlled lighting, cozy setups, and quiet surroundings, a studio space allows you to focus entirely on the baby and the bond between family members.
As a newborn photographer based in Yucaipa, California, I’ve spent years crafting a studio process that’s both gentle for the baby and meaningful for the family. If you’re just starting out or shifting from outdoor to in-studio sessions, this guide is for you.
What Gear Do You Need for In-Studio Newborn Photography?

Start simple and build over time. The most important thing is knowing how to use the gear you already have.
Camera & Lens:
● Any DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual settings
● A 50mm or 35mm prime lens for soft, flattering portraits
Lighting Setup:
● One softbox with continuous LED or strobe light
● Large window light (with sheer curtains) if using natural light
Studio Essentials:
● Newborn posing beanbag or soft surface
● Variety of wraps, blankets, and soft props
● Space heater or heating pad for baby’s comfort
● White noise machine to create a calming atmosphere
Lighting Tips for Natural-Looking Studio Photos
Window Light: Position your posing setup near a large window. Diffuse the light with sheer curtains and use a reflector to bounce soft light back onto baby.
Artificial Light: Use a softbox positioned at a 45-degree angle to the baby’s face. This mimics natural side lighting and adds gentle shadow depth.
Avoid overhead or direct flash setups as they can flatten features or startle the baby.
Setting Up a Comfortable, Baby-Friendly Studio

A successful newborn studio doesn’t require much space. It just needs to be clean, warm, and thoughtfully organized.
● Choose neutral backdrops that won’t distract from baby’s features
● Prep props, wraps, and gear before clients arrive
● Keep burp cloths, wipes, and extra wraps easily accessible
A warm studio helps the baby stay sleepy and content, making the session flow more smoothly.
Camera Settings to Start With
Use manual or aperture-priority mode to control the depth of field:
● Aperture: f/2.8 to f/4
● Shutter Speed: 1/160 or faster
● ISO: 100 to 400 (up to 800 with window light)
Focus on baby’s eyes or lashes, especially in close-up shots. Use single-point autofocus and double-check sharpness before moving on.
Safe, Simple Newborn Posing

Keep baby’s safety as your top priority. Don’t force poses or rush transitions.
Some of my go-to studio poses include:
● Swaddled baby on a beanbag, with hands near the face
● Baby resting on their side or tummy with chin supported
● Family holding baby chest to chest or in the cradle position
Always have a parent within reach, especially during elevated or side poses.
Composition Tips That Tell a Story
Great composition helps create emotion in studio portraits:
● Use negative space around baby to create softness
● Include hands or soft props for scale and interest
● Capture close-up details: eyelashes, lips, tiny fingers
Vary your angles to offer parents a mix of wide, mid, and tight shots in their gallery.
Editing for Soft, True-to-Life Skin Tones

Newborn skin editing requires a gentle touch:
● Correct white balance first to avoid orange or magenta casts
● Slightly lift exposure and shadows if needed
● Clean small flakes or blemishes, but avoid over-smoothing
Preserving skin texture keeps your edits looking timeless and honest.
Why Studio Photography Can Build Client Trust
In-studio sessions feel like a retreat from daily chaos. The environment is designed around comfort, efficiency, and connection. With everything under your control, clients experience less stress and that shows in their expressions.
I’ve found that many families are relieved when they arrive and realize they don’t need to do anything but relax while I guide them through each step.
Final Thoughts and Invitation
Studio newborn photography is both an art and a responsibility. The work you do becomes part of someone’s legacy, printed, framed, and cherished.
If you’re building your own studio workflow, I hope this guide helps you create a space that’s not only functional but filled with intention.
